Coir Substrate Suppliers UK
Choosing a coir substrate suppliers UK is mostly an exercise in working out who will still be answering the phone in month eight. The material is broadly similar across the industry. What differs is the processing behind it, the documentation that arrives with it, and whether anyone can tell you what is actually in the container you paid for.
We mill, wash, buffer and press coir at our own facilities in Sri Lanka and ship direct to UK growers. No trading layer, no relabelling, and a lot report with every shipment.
What direct supply changes
Most coir reaching the UK passes through at least one intermediary. That is not inherently a problem, but it does put distance between you and the people who made the material, which shows up in three places.
- Specification control. When you are buying from stock rather than from production, you take the blend that exists. We press to the crop specification you give us.
- Traceability. A trading house can usually tell you the origin country. We can tell you the lot, the washing cycle and the test results for the material on your pallet.
- Problem solving. If a crop behaves oddly in week six, the question is usually a processing question. Going through a middleman adds a week to answering it.
How to evaluate any coir supplier
These are the questions worth asking whoever you buy from, including us. A supplier who answers them quickly has done the work. A supplier who changes the subject is telling you something.
| Question | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| What is the blend, by percentage? | Specific figures, not “coir based” |
| Which extraction method is the EC figure based on? | 1:1.5 or saturated media extract, stated clearly |
| What is the sodium and chloride level? | Figures in ppm, not “low salt” |
| What is the potassium level on buffered material? | Well under 150 ppm, which proves the buffering happened |
| Is particle grading published? | Percentages through defined sieves, not an adjective |
| Is rinse water recirculated, and what is water use per tonne? | A figure they can produce without hunting for it |
| Can I have a lot-specific test report with the shipment? | Yes, as standard rather than on request |
| What is the end-of-life route? | Compostable or reusable, with evidence |
Our guide to washed, buffered and raw grades explains how to read the answers once you have them.
What ships with every order
- Lot test report. Electrical conductivity with the extraction method stated, pH, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, particle grading and moisture at loading.
- Container loading plan. Unit count, stacking arrangement, palletised or loose, agreed before the booking is confirmed.
- Phytosanitary certificate. Issued by Sri Lankan plant quarantine, confirming the shipment is free of soil and quarantine pests.
- Commercial documents. Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, raised together so UK clearance is not held up.
Lead times to UK ports
Coir ships by sea from Colombo. The production window matters as much as the transit, and it is the part most buyers forget to ask about.
| Stage | Typical duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Production for a fresh lot | 3 to 5 weeks | Shorter if we are shipping from existing stock |
| Colombo to UK ports | 23 to 27 days | Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway |
| Clearance and inland haulage | 3 to 7 days | Depends on your forwarder and location |
Through 2026 the whole trade has faced vessel shortages and unpredictable sailing schedules, which has made that window less reliable than anyone would like. The practical response is simple: order a season ahead rather than reactively. Compressed coir stores dry and takes up very little warehouse space, so holding a buffer costs you almost nothing.
Incoterms
FOB Colombo, CFR, CIF or DAP. Newer buyers often start on CIF because the freight is handled for them, then move to FOB once volume makes their own forwarder cheaper. Neither is wrong, but know which one you have signed, because it decides who carries the risk when a sailing is rolled.
Quality and sourcing
Our manufacturing operations are in the Anuradhapura district, with the headquarters and primary factory at Thambuttegama and a 50-acre premises at Nochchiyagama carrying a five-acre drying floor. Production runs around the clock, and husks are collected from mills inside a tight radius of the factory, which keeps the raw material consistent.
We are certified for GMP, Good Manufacturing Practices, and hold a greenhouse gas emissions certification assessed by Meo Carbon Solutions in Germany. Company officials visit customer sites roughly every six months to see how the material is performing in the field, and what comes back from those visits feeds into the product rather than into a report.
For the sourcing questions UK retail customers are increasingly asking their suppliers, see our guide to the Responsible Sourcing Scheme for growing media.
Starting small
Trial pallets are available for most formats. They ship with the same lot documentation a full container carries, so the trial data and the production data are directly comparable, which is the whole point of trialling.
If you are switching from rockwool or from a peat blend, send your current fertigation schedule with the enquiry. Most of the transition risk sits in the watering rather than the substrate, and we would rather raise that before you plant. Our irrigation guide covers the adjustments, and the glasshouse tomato guide works through a full switch.
What we supply
Twelve formats, all pressed at our own facilities: grow bags, open top bags, peat blocks, chip blocks, briquettes, starter blocks, seeding pellets, disks, fibre pots, coco chips, fibre and weed mat.
Each is available washed, extra washed or calcium buffered. For bag dimensions and blend ratios by crop, see coir grow bags for UK growers.
Frequently asked questions
Do you supply direct to UK growers?
Yes. We ship direct container loads from Colombo to UK ports, with a UK contact for enquiries and a lot report with every shipment. There is no trading layer between our production and your loading bay.
What is the minimum order?
A trial pallet for most formats, then a 20ft or 40ft container depending on the format and your storage. Minimums for private label runs are confirmed with the quotation.
How do I know what is actually in the container?
Every shipment carries a lot test report covering electrical conductivity with the extraction method stated, pH, sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, particle grading and moisture at loading. Pre-shipment samples are couriered from the production lot itself rather than a reference bag.
Which certifications do you hold?
GMP, Good Manufacturing Practices, for manufacturing standards, and a greenhouse gas emissions certification assessed by Meo Carbon Solutions in Germany. Ask for current certificates with your quotation.
Do you supply private label?
Yes. Bag dimensions, pre-cut planting holes, drainage slits, irrigation stake holes, film colour and printed branding are made to your drawing. Minimum quantities apply per format.
How far ahead should I order?
A season ahead is the honest answer. Production runs three to five weeks for a fresh lot, sea transit to UK ports is roughly 23 to 27 days, and sailing schedules through 2026 have been less predictable than usual. Compressed coir stores dry in very little space, so a buffer is cheap insurance.

Send the crop, the volume and your destination port. You will get a specification, a loading plan and indicative freight rather than a brochure.
